Job Description

Job ID:

The University of South Carolina’s (USC) Arnold School of Public Health (ASPH) in Columbia, SC (http://www/sph.sc.edu/) seeks applications for three tenure-track faculty positions.  USC is the state’s flagship university, which the Carnegie Foundation gave its highest ranking for research activity, as demonstrated by a consistent and steep upward trajectory in the volume and impact of its research and extramural grant funding.  USC’s strategic vision incorporates the twin goals of conducting high-impact research and producing socially meaningful outcomes, with a special focus on reducing health disparities.  The ASPH leads research activity at USC, with annual extramural grant funding consistently exceeding $25 million.  The anticipated hires will contribute to the School’s goal of deepening and broadening its current expertise and research portfolio in cancer-related research.

Qualifications:  Applicants should have a track record of expertise and interest in cancer research involving at least one of the following disciplines/areas:  Nutrition; Tobacco; Inflammation; Stress Biology; Social Deprivation; Health Economics; Environmental Science; Public Health Policy; Speech Language Disorders; Biomarkers and Bioinformatics; Social and Health Justice; Infections and Co-Morbidities; Physical Activity and Exercise; Health Promotion and Communication; Health Services Policy and Management; Global/International Health; and Cancer-related Genomics.

A terminal degree in the relevant discipline, with a consistent track record of scholarship and funded grant activity commensurate with rank are essential.  The successful applicant’s portfolio will reflect both independent leadership of original research and substantive participation in interdisciplinary research.  Experience in teaching and mentoring graduate students is valued.  Successful candidates will join a strong faculty including well-funded investigators in various cancer-related areas.  Most of these investigators participate in or are supported by several NIH and CDC grant-funded centers that in turn are networked with major health care systems in South Carolina, the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), and many universities and research institutes both domestically and abroad.

Responsibilities:  Participation in professional, graduate, and undergraduate education, and ability to develop and maintain a nationally recognized, extramurally funded research program, is expected.

Columbia, SC enjoys year-round sunshine, and is within two hours of pristine beaches, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and many outdoor recreation areas, including parks such as the Congaree National Park and the 50,000 acre Lake Murray. The city includes historical and cultural attractions, performing arts, international food and cuisines and sporting events.

Prospective applicants should submit their curriculum vitae, a letter of interest articulating research accomplishments/interests, teaching and mentoring experience, professional goals, and a list of three references to:  Cancer Faculty Search, c/o Barbara Reager, Arnold School of Public Health, 800 Sumter Street, HESC 102, Columbia, SC 29208, or email to breager@mailbox.sc.edu .

The University of South Carolina is an affirmative action, equal opportunity institution.  Minorities and women are encouraged to apply; our many minority and female students value role models.  The University of South Carolina has a generous family leave policy and is responsive to the needs of dual career couples.
