HEBREW SENIORLIFE

INSTITUTE FOR AGING RESEARCH

AGING BRAIN CENTER

ASSISTANT SCIENTIST II/ASSOCIATE SCIENTIST

Hebrew SeniorLife invites nominations and applications for the role of Assistant Scientist II or Associate Scientist in the Institute for Aging Research’s Aging Brain Center. The candidate must also meet requirements for a faculty level appointment (Assistant or Associate Professor) at Harvard Medical School.

Reporting to Dr. Sharon Inouye, Director of the Aging Brain Center (ABC) and Professor of Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, this faculty level researcher will bring expertise in his or her own area of research, while also fully engaging in collaborative projects in the Aging Brain Center. Currently, the ABC investigators are exploring the interrelationship of delirium and dementia/Alzheimer's disease; the evaluation of vulnerability to cognitive dysfunction and the elucidation of cognitive reserve capacity; and post-operative cognitive dysfunction. Studies focus on biological, medical, social and psychological factors influencing cognitive function as people age. After a 3-year period of start-up support, , the candidate will be expected to secure independent grant funding to support a successful career in clinical research.

The successful candidate will possess the following: A Ph.D. or M.D.  in a relevant field, as well as post-doctoral research training followed by at least 1-2 years of faculty level research.  Preference will be given to those candidates with a Ph.D. or advanced clinical degree in neuropsychology, psychology, epidemiology, gerontology, or aging research, although related fields will be considered. The candidate should possess a strong academic background in clinical epidemiologic research of cognition in older adults, demonstrated ability to obtain independent grant funding from federal (preferred) or nonfederal sources, mentorship experience, and success in having first-authored peer-reviewed publications. U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status is required for this position.

Affiliated with Harvard Medical School, Hebrew SeniorLife (HSL) began over 100 years ago, committed to maximizing the quality of life for older adults through an integrated network of housing alternatives, clinical care, research, and educational programs.  HSL houses the Institute for Aging Research (IFAR), the largest provider-based geriatric research facility in the United States. In 2005, IFAR established the Aging Brain Center, with a primary mission of bringing together investigators across disciplines to better understand the mechanisms involved in cognitive decline and to develop and test treatment and prevention strategies. Researchers in the Aging Brain Center focus on the detection, prevention and amelioration of cognitive impairment. In 2009, the Center was awarded the first-ever program project on delirium funded by the NIA at $11 million.

The Center currently employs three faculty members, one Post-Doctoral Fellow, and 17 full-time staff, along with additional part-time staff, trainees, students, and interns.  A large number of co-investigators (over 25), either associate or full professors from Harvard Medical School and Boston University, collaborate on research projects within the Aging Brain Center.
