Position Summary

Perform cancer surveillance and epidemiologic research, maintain registry-based data tools, develop and monitor registry-related policies and procedures, contribute to funding applications, analyze data and disseminate research findings, conduct assessments of patterns and trends of cancer in Iowa, mentor students in practicums and research projects, oversee the data request process and fulfill data requests, and collaborate with researchers outside of the Registry on research endeavors.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Data/Research Analysis and Evaluation

• Develop new data analysis techniques or methodology.

• Perform advanced data analysis techniques.

• Work independently on complex research tasks.

• Critically review literature to further the research and develop new hypotheses with other investigators.

• Responsible for maintaining and implementing the policies and procedures related to Iowa Cancer Registry data requests and data release.

• Assist with the education of faculty and staff on Registry data and analytic approaches.

• Seek opportunities to enhance one’s own professional knowledge, skills, and abilities as they relate to one’s current position and/or to prepare for potential future roles and overall career development.
 

• Attend training meetings and classes and review reading material to augment study design and analysis skills.

Dissemination of Research Results

• Prepare and submit first-author manuscripts for publication.

• Represent the research group at professional meetings.

• Develop a recognized national reputation in the scientific community.

• Develop a sustained record of scholarly publications and peer-reviewed principal-author scientific publications.

• Participate in public outreach activities.

• Create and disseminate reports of Iowa cancer trends.

Research Proposals/Grants

• Develop an established record of participation and leadership in successfully funded research grants or contract proposals.

• Certify compliance with all University, state, and federal regulations when required.

• Assume responsibility for all aspects of a research project or contract, including budget, expenditures, and agency reporting.

• Participate in determining research priorities and planning programs of research.

• Write research proposals to obtain funding as PI or co-PI.

• Serve as a PI and co-PI on grants or contract proposals.

Service  

• Seek leadership opportunities in professional organizations related to cancer surveillance and/or cancer control and epidemiology (e.g., NAACCR, ICC).

• Review papers and proposals.

• Develop a reputation and recognition within the scientific community.

• Demonstrate stature in discipline with substantial publications and professional contributions.

Human Resources/Supervision

• Mentor graduate or professional students.

• May provide functional and/or administrative supervision for staff.

• Assist staff with definition and solution of problems.

Qualifications

Education Requirement

A person in this classification has the academic knowledge of a discipline generally associated with a Doctoral degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Biostatistics or an equivalent professional degree, i.e., M.D., D.D.S., or D.V.M.

Experience Required

Typically, 3 years of experience or knowledge performing the following:

• Cancer surveillance or epidemiologic research

• Data management and analysis experience with SAS, R, or STATA

• Ability to write and prepare reports

• Demonstrated publication record with at least 2 first-authored publications within the past 3 years

• Experience completing human subjects (IRB) new project and continuing review/modification

• Demonstrated experience with development and presentation of posters/presentations of research findings.

• Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Desirable Qualifications

• Data visualization expertise, preferably with Tableau

• Evidence of effective public relations activities

• Experience using SEER*Stat
