The University of Texas
Medical Branch (UTMB) seeks an individual with an outstanding
record of leadership, education, and scholarship to serve as
Chair for the Department of Epidemiology within the new School
of Public and Population Health, which was established in
2022. The Department of Epidemiology comprised of 6 faculty
members, with highly active research portfolios in the areas
of chronic disease epidemiology, infectious disease
epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology, correctional epidemiology,
aging, and health services research. We seek a visionary
leader who will build upon current excellence to grow this
dynamic and diverse Department. Consistent with the core
values of the institution, the Professor and Chair of the
Department will be responsible for the quality of educational
and scientific programs within the department, as well as for
the overall leadership, development, and management of the
department.
As the academic leader,
the Chair is expected to foster a collaborative environment
for faculty to: excel in research, education, practice, and
service, and submit competitive applications for external
funding; recruit new faculty; recruit and mentor students and
fellows; manage finances and related administrative matters;
and build and foster partnerships with the broader UTMB
academic community and the larger communities served by the
University.
Applicants must be at the level of Associate or Full
Professor, have a PhD, MD, or equivalent degree; eight or more
years of related experience; a track record of funded
research; demonstrated familiarity with academic
administration in their specialty field; and a comprehensive
understanding of a multidisciplinary academic health sciences
environment. The incumbent will be responsible for management
of the Department consistent with guidelines set forth in the
UTMB Handbook of Operating Procedures and the Board of
Regents’ Rules and Regulations and in support of UTMB’s
rapidly expanding programs in public health and other
endeavors.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and

The ideal candidate will be energized by the faculty in the
Department, who are established and emerging scholars,
multidisciplinary in the field of epidemiology, active in
multiple national and international organizations, with
research funded by the NIH and other sources.
The School of Public and Population Health (SPPH) was approved
by the University of Texas Board of Regents in 2021, and was
established in 2022, with a mission of leading innovative
public health education, translational research, and
evidence-informed practice and policy through authentic
collaborations in the Gulf Coast region, Texas, and the world.
The School currently has four academic departments (Bioethics
and Health Humanities, Biostatistics and Data Sciences,
Epidemiology, Population Health & Health Disparities). Most
faculty in SPPH have long-standing relationships and active
collaborations with other Schools and Research Centers on
campus. In 2022, the SPPH had an externally supported research
portfolio of $12 million. The School offers 5 masters-level
programs including a Masters in Public Health (MPH) and an
MD-MPH program. It also offers three PhD programs. For more

UTMB was established in 1891 as the first academic health
center in Texas and is a component of the University of Texas
System. Today, UTMB includes five schools (medicine, nursing,
health professions, graduate biomedical sciences, and public
and population health), a network of hospitals and clinics
that provide a full range of primary and specialized medical
care, and numerous research facilities.
The city of Galveston is a popular tourist and cruise ship
