The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) seeks an individual with an outstanding record of leadership, education, and scholarship to serve as Chair for the Department of Epidemiology within the new School of Public and Population Health, which was established in 2022. The Department of Epidemiology comprised of 6 faculty members, with highly active research portfolios in the areas of chronic disease epidemiology, infectious disease epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology, correctional epidemiology, aging, and health services research. We seek a visionary leader who will build upon current excellence to grow this dynamic and diverse Department. Consistent with the core values of the institution, the Professor and Chair of the Department will be responsible for the quality of educational and scientific programs within the department, as well as for the overall leadership, development, and management of the department.

As the academic leader, the Chair is expected to foster a collaborative environment for faculty to: excel in research, education, practice, and service, and submit competitive applications for external funding; recruit new faculty; recruit and mentor students and fellows; manage finances and related administrative matters; and build and foster partnerships with the broader UTMB academic community and the larger communities served by the University.

Applicants must be at the level of Associate or Full Professor, have a PhD, MD, or equivalent degree; eight or more years of related experience; a track record of funded research; demonstrated familiarity with academic administration in their specialty field; and a comprehensive understanding of a multidisciplinary academic health sciences environment. The incumbent will be responsible for management of the Department consistent with guidelines set forth in the UTMB Handbook of Operating Procedures and the Board of Regents’ Rules and Regulations and in support of UTMB’s rapidly expanding programs in public health and other endeavors.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Interested applicants must apply online and include a curriculum vitae and a letter of interest with description of experience, record of extramural funding, research accomplishments and future directions, beliefs and practices related to education, and commitment to promoting health equity and addressing health disparities. Review of applications will begin immediately.

The ideal candidate will be energized by the faculty in the Department, who are established and emerging scholars, multidisciplinary in the field of epidemiology, active in multiple national and international organizations, with research funded by the NIH and other sources.

The School of Public and Population Health (SPPH) was approved by the University of Texas Board of Regents in 2021, and was established in 2022, with a mission of leading innovative public health education, translational research, and evidence-informed practice and policy through authentic collaborations in the Gulf Coast region, Texas, and the world. The School currently has four academic departments (Bioethics and Health Humanities, Biostatistics and Data Sciences, Epidemiology, Population Health & Health Disparities). Most faculty in SPPH have long-standing relationships and active collaborations with other Schools and Research Centers on campus. In 2022, the SPPH had an externally supported research portfolio of $12 million. The School offers 5 masters-level programs including a Masters in Public Health (MPH) and an MD-MPH program.
