UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
CHAIR,
DEPARTMENT OF EPIDEMIOLOGY AND PUBLIC HEALTH
The
University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) seeks a
strategic leader and an accomplished researcher to serve as
Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health
(EPH).
Building on the department's rich history of success, the
next Chair will partner with colleagues across EPH to
develop a strategic, integrative vision for the department's
future. The Chair will have the opportunity to grow one of
the largest non-clinical departments at the School of
Medicine, expanding research and education, deepening
collaborations across the institution, and making a positive
impact on public health in Maryland and beyond.
The
Department of Epidemiology and Public Health has been at the
forefront of public health discovery since its inception in
1833. EPH is renowned for innovative research in
gerontology, cancer epidemiology, genomic and infectious
disease epidemiology, translational toxicology,
biostatistics and bioinformatics, preventive medicine, and
health disparities and population health. The department has
a rich history of translating interdisciplinary research to
clinical practice and community-based interventions to
prevent disease and improve public health.
The
department is committed to training the next generation of
public health scientists and practitioners. EPH comprises 62
faculty members with primary appointments in the department,
which offers degree programs in epidemiology, gerontology,
public health, and clinical research and maintains research
projects around the globe.
EPH
ranks #3 in total NIH funding among epidemiology departments
in U.S. public medical schools and #9 among all U.S. schools
of medicine according to the Blue Ridge Institute for
Medical Research. The department generates approximately 8%
of all NIH funding at UMSOM. EPH faculty received 124 awards
totaling $25M in extramural funding in FY24.
UMSOM was established in
1807 and is one of the oldest public medical schools in the
country. UMSOM is known for synergy among the clinical and
basic science departments and for pioneering new treatments
in many areas of strength, which include transplant science,
infectious disease, cancer care at the University of
Maryland Marlene & Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer
Center, and shock trauma at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma
Center, the nation's first and only integrated trauma
hospital, where groundbreaking research and innovative
medical procedures save thousands of lives every year.
A
leading U.S. academic medical center, UMSOM is currently
among the top public medical schools in the country, with an
impressive $530 million in extramural research funding. This
funding ranks UMSOM at #9 among all public medical schools
and #32 among all medical schools for research grants and
contract expenditures.
In
the next Chair of Epidemiology and Public Health, the school
seeks a distinguished researcher and experienced
administrator with a deep commitment to advancing health
equity. The ideal candidate will have a history of building
collaborations across academic departments, institutes, and
centers, and a proven ability or demonstrable potential for
success in leading an academic unit of comparable size and
complexity.
A
doctoral degree with training in epidemiology is required
along with qualifications sufficient for an appointment as
an Associate or Full Professor at the University of Maryland
School of Medicine.
