Teaching Faculty Position Description - Epidemiology
The Department of Epidemiology in the School of Public Health
at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks
applications for dynamic teaching scholars to join our
department. Specifically, we are interested in applicants who
can share their passion and commitment to epidemiology with
students in and outside the classroom, at the graduate and
undergraduate levels. Applicants should have a doctoral degree
in Epidemiology, Public Health, or a closely related field
with formal training in epidemiology. Applicants with
experience and/or training in public health practice are
strongly encouraged to apply.
This is a non-tenure earning, full-time (12-month) position
with initial rank depending on qualifications and experience.
There is potential for advancement in rank at the Assistant
and Associate Professor levels.
Demonstrated excellence in teaching is required for this
position.
This can take the form of previous experience developing and
teaching courses (independently or as a teaching
assistant/secondary instructor) or extensive experience
preparing and delivering education programs.
The expected teaching load is 6 courses per year
(including summer) in both the undergraduate and graduate
programs. Courses can be in-person or online. Potential
undergraduate courses include Intro to Epidemiology and Public
Health Data and Methods, and potential graduate level classes
include Principles of Epidemiologic Research and Quantitative
Methods in Epidemiology. Other courses will be assigned based
on the applicant’s interests or in response to programmatic
needs. Though teaching
will be the primary responsibility and evaluation criterion
for promotion, additional scholarly activity, especially
activity involving students or related to public health
pedagogy, is encouraged. Selected education-related service to
the Department, School, and field is expected for promotion,
for example such service could include leadership of a program
(e.g. MPH director).

approach to teaching diverse students.
The Department of Epidemiology
The Department focuses on research and education in
epidemiology, the distribution and determinants of disease in
humans, with particular emphasis on cardiovascular disease,
cancer, infectious diseases, population genetics, reproductive
health, musculoskeletal health, international health, and
injury. The faculty have expertise in the distribution and
health consequences of behaviors including physical activity
and in social determinants of health. The goals of the
Department’s epidemiology educational programs are to provide
all students in the School of Public Health with an
educational experience in epidemiology that is suited to their
career objectives. We prepare epidemiology students to succeed
in research or practice; carry out research that contributes
to the understanding of the causes of major diseases and the
methods for their control. We provide service to the state and
region in joint efforts to study, prevent, and control disease
and injury. The Department of Epidemiology offers
practice-focused Masters of Public Health degrees and
research-focused Masters of Science in Public Health and
Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Department faculty teach in the
Bachelor of Science in Public Health degree program, and the
university-wide Blazer Core Curriculum.
The School of Public Health (SOPH)
The UAB School of Public Health's mission is to make positive
and lasting change in the public's health through the pursuit
of excellence in scholarship, teaching, and service to the
larger community.
