The Department of
Health Services, Policy & Practice of the Brown
University School of Public Health invite
applications for a faculty position in the areas
of evidence synthesis, or development of
evidence-based policy or guidance at the
Assistant, Associate, or full Professor level in
the University’s research track.
Applicants’
contributions may involve applied,
empirical-methodological (e.g.,
meta-epidemiological), or
fundamental-methodological research (e.g.,
development and validation of novel quantitative,
qualitative, or mixed methods).
The
above-mentioned areas of interest are meant
broadly. For example, “evidence synthesis”
includes systematic review or meta-analysis,
evidence fusion (synthesis of very different types
of information), qualitative synthesis,
mathematical modeling, and related objects of
study. Evidence synthesis in all health contexts
is of interest (e.g., synthesis of laboratory, -omic,
epidemiological, clinical data), but special
consideration is given to health technology
assessment (i.e., assessing the efficacy,
effectiveness, or utility of medications,
interventions, or policies in medicine and public
health). “Development of evidence-based policy or
guidance” is also broadly meant and refers to
using all practically available and applicable
knowledge to inform clinical practice guidelines
or public policy development.
Applicants’ contributions should include applied,
and optionally, methodological research in
evidence synthesis. Relevant methodological
research directions include, but are not limited
to, statistical, qualitative, or mixed methods for
evidence synthesis, empirical meta-epidemiological
research, text mining and natural language
processing, evidence-based decision making,
learning across designs or across data presented
at different granularities, and causal inference
in evidence synthesis. The department is
especially interested in qualified candidates who
can contribute, through their research, teaching,
and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of
the academic community within the School of Public
Health and the University.
This
scientist may serve as a Senior Project Lead at
the AHRQ-designated Brown Evidence-based Practice
Center (EPC), housed at the Center for Evidence
Synthesis in Health. She or he will be assisting
the EPC Directors in the day-to-day operation of
the EPC and applying for, leading, and conducting
systematic review and related projects. The
successful applicant is expected to serve as
mentor and trainer for other projects at the
Center for Evidence Synthesis in Health; mentor
others to serve as project leads at the Brown EPC;
and mentor/train graduate students, trainees,
clinical research methodologists, and
biostatisticians.
The
position will likely be affiliated with the Center
for Evidence Synthesis in Health, which is led by
TA Trikalinos. The object of study of this center
includes methods and applications of evidence
synthesis and health decision analysis, broadly
meant. More information about Brown’s Center for
Evidence Synthesis in Health is available here:

MD or equivalent, or
PhD in biostatistics, epidemiology, economics,
or other quantitative disciplines
Highly promising
potential (for Assistant Professors) and
documented record (for Associate and Full
Professors) of applied and methodological
contributions in the areas of interest.
Highly promising
potential (for Assistant Professors) and
documented record (for Associate and Full
Professors) for securing competitive funding.
Prior experience
with AHRQ’s Effective Healthcare EPC program or
equivalent is a plus.
Application Instructions
Academic rank will be
determined by the qualifications and experience of
the applicant. Interested candidates should submit
a letter of application, curriculum vitae and a
brief research statement outlining their interests
via Interfolio.
The letter of
application should indicate the rank of the
position (Assistant, Associate, Full).
Candidates who wish to
be considered for Assistant Professor should
arrange for three letters of recommendation to be
submitted through Interfolio. Applicants for the
Assistant Professor Rank should exhibit a
potential to become top caliber researchers. They
should demonstrate autonomy in developing their
own research agenda and the potential to obtain
competitive funding.
Candidates who wish to
be considered for Associate or Full Professor
should submit a list of five prospective referees.
Applicants for the Associate (Full) Professor
level must also have a national (international)
reputation in health services research, an
independently funded program of research, and a
proven track record of leadership in research,
teaching, and professional service.
Review of applications
will begin on May 1, 2024. Applications received
after the priority deadline (on March 30, 2024)
may be reviewed until the position is filled or
the search is closed.
