Epidemiology and Population Health (Human & Planetary Health)
Work Type: Associate or Full
Professor level
Location: Stanford University
Categories: School of Medicine and Doerr School of
Sustainability
The Department of Epidemiology and Population Health at the
Stanford School of Medicine seeks faculty members at the
Associate or Full Professor level for an exciting new role
focused on Epidemiology and Human & Planetary Health. The
faculty position will hold a primary appointment
the School of Medicine, with a joint appointment in the
Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. This position will
have a leadership role in Stanford’s new Center in Human &
Planetary Health, and contribute to the research and
educational activities of the effort.
The growing field of Human & Planetary Health studies the
interconnection between the health of the environment and the
health of people. It seeks to understand the impacts of human
disruptions of Earth’s natural systems to develop
comprehensive and equity-focused solutions that protect human
health and the health of our planet. At Stanford, this work is
being advanced by the multidisciplinary Human & Planetary
Health Initiative, which builds on existing programs to create
knowledge, train leaders, and drive impact at the
intersections of the environment, biodiversity, and human
health.
We invite applicants from a variety of disciplines related to
epidemiology and the health implications of climate change and
environmental exposures, which could include
solutions-oriented research around the following topics:
●
Climate change &
health
to understand opportunities for equitable mitigation and
adaptation solutions to climate impacts, including humans’
ability to adapt to changing temperatures and extreme weather
events.
●
Pollution & health
to better understand how myriad forms of pollution—including
industrial chemicals, air pollution, and water
pollution—impact human health, and to develop programs and
inform policies that protect population health.
●
Food, health & the
environment
to develop evidence-based recommendations that promote healthy
diets and nutrition in a growing world population and changing
climate with more equitable production and distribution.
Strong research methodologies that include epidemiology,
environmental health sciences, cancer epidemiology, spatial
mapping, real-world data applications, exposomics,
implementation science, global health, environmental justice,
and public health are welcome. The applicant will play an
active role in building and leading the Human & Planetary
Health effort at Stanford, including strengthening the
connection between the School of Medicine and the Doerr School
of Sustainability. They will also be expected to develop large
multi-investigator grants in a highly-collaborative
environment in partnership with other disciplines, and teach a
growing number of students who have expressed a strong
interest in engaging in Human & Planetary Health.
The predominant criterion for appointment in the University
Tenure Line is a major commitment to research and teaching.
Faculty rank will be determined by the qualification and
experience of the successful candidate. The successful
applicants should have a PhD degree in Epidemiology,
Environmental Health, or a related field, and a demonstrable
record of scholarly achievement, including the ability to
collaborate productively with other disciplines.
Interdisciplinary research approaches are welcome and will be
fostered at Stanford through connections to and affiliations
with groups including:
the Center for Innovation in Global Health,
the Woods Institute for the Environment,
the
Program for Disease Ecology, Health and the Environment,
the
Environmental Justice Working Group,
the new Institute for Sustainable Societies, the
Center for Population Health Sciences,
the Maternal and Child
Health Research Institute,
the King Center on Global Development, and more.
