 ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:

The mission of the Florida Department of Health is to protect, promote & improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county, & community efforts.  The department shall identify, diagnose, and conduct surveillance of diseases and health conditions in the state and accumulate the health statistics necessary to establish trends; implement interventions that prevent or limit the impact or spread of diseases and health conditions; collect, manage and analyze vital statistics and other health data to inform the public and formulate public health policy and planning; maintain and coordinate preparedness for and responses to public health emergencies in the state; provide or ensure the provision of  quality health care and related services to identified populations in the state; regulate environmental activities that have a direct impact on public health in the state; and regulate health practitioners for the preservation of the health, safety, and welfare of the public.

The Duval County Health Department provides services to the county’s residents and visitors and is responsible for assessing, maintaining and improving health and safety within the county as part of the Florida Department of Health. The Duval County Health Department provides most of the public health services in the county, employs approximately 700 staff, and has an annual budget in excess of $46.5 million.  The Duval County Health Department facility is located in Jacksonville, Florida.  The responsibilities of the Duval County Health Department are to:

• Prevent epidemics and the spread of disease

• Protect against environmental hazards

• Prevent injuries

• Promote and encourage healthy behaviors

• Respond to disasters and assist communities in recovery efforts

• Assure the quality and accessibility of health services

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Director of the Duval County Health Department will lead one of the 67 County Health Departments in the State of Florida.  Responsibilities include direction, supervision, and evaluation of a wide variety of health programs including but not limited to environmental, nursing, chronic disease, bioterrorism preparedness and response, dental health, family planning, communicable disease, and vital statistics.

 

The Duval County Health Department Director must be committed to providing the highest quality of service to the people of Duval County.  Expected qualities for success include team work, communication, collaboration, and negotiation.
