We are a strength-based, supportive, and positive working environment that offers flexible working arrangements with opportunities available for hybrid-telework schedule with some in-office requirements in accordance with CDPH’s Telework Policy and Procedures. With the OSH, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that your work will support efforts that improve the health and well-being of children/youth, families, and school staff across California.

About the Role:

The School Health Researcher (Research Scientist III; Social/Behavioral OR Epidemiology/Biostatistics) will be responsible for the independent design, development and implementation of research, evaluation, and trend analysis/performance monitoring focused on youth behavioral issues and prevention efforts in school settings. Duties will include providing authoritative scientific guidance to other scientists and staff contributing to research, evaluation, data analysis, performance monitoring, and school-based and school-linked primary prevention activities for behavioral health issues among youth including substance misuse and suicide.

Responsibilities:

Conduct scientific analysis and preparation of data for tracking/performance monitoring.

Design and conduct public health performance monitoring focused on primary prevention for behavioral health issues, as well as school-based health centers (e.g., student receipt of health services, provision of health services by centers, service funding mechanisms).

Take steps to increase access to available data and related findings in the areas of general behavioral health prevention and school-based health centers.

Prepare data and findings from analysis for dissemination to stakeholders.

Prepare ADA compliant data briefs, fact sheets, and other materials to be shared on relevant CDPH webpages, as well as via email blasts, social media posts, presentations, webinars, and other methods.

Disseminate scientific study findings by preparing scientific reports, publications, and presentations of relevant scientific findings.

Develop data dashboards that include data sources and data consistent with the requirements of Health and Safety Code 124174.3 on school-based health centers, as well as other relevant data (e.g., injuries, behavioral health).

Ensure the scientific quality and integrity of all data shared online.

In collaboration with epidemiologists and public health experts, coordinate this data work with related surveillance efforts (e.g., EpiCenter, CA School-Based Health Alliance).

Provide technical assistance to data users on how to use the data dashboards.

Develop and provide technical assistance and resources to help data users translate data into actionable information to use for decision-making, program planning, and evaluation purposes.

Provide scientific leadership and technical scientific consultation to other researchers and state and local public health entities, as well as school-based health centers.

Act as a CDPH spokesperson on the public health aspects of behavioral health risks and outcomes related to schools and students, as well as school health topics more broadly.

Actively serve as a team member on internal and external teams, advisory groups, and scientific forums to enhance the availability, quality, sustainability, and proper interpretation of complex data.

Make scientific decisions based on data to inform programs and policies.

Participate in the general functions of the Office of School Health (e.g., participate in meetings, develop/contribute to bill analyses, respond to media and other requests, contribute to the Schools Hub and Office Hours, contribute to development and submission of grant/contract proposals). Provide technical scientific consultation to other staff at CDPH and partners in State Government.

Desirable Qualifications:

Experience conducting research or surveillance of behavioral health, school-age youth, or other public health factors.

Prior involvement evaluating programs focused on behavioral health, school-age youth, or other public health factors.

Knowledge of conducting, summarizing, and interpreting statistical analyses in SAS or using other statistical software.

Proven experience with development of resources/materials intended to disseminate and translated data/research findings (e.g., reports, presentations, fact sheets, data visualization, dashboards).

Demonstrated experience interacting effectively and achieving results with internal team members and external partners.
