The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is currently
hiring for a School Health Researcher (Research Scientist III;
Social/Behavioral OR Epidemiology/Biostatistics) within our
Office of School Health!
About the Office of School Health:
The Office of School Health (OSH) supports efforts to advance
health, wellness, and safe in-person instruction for
California’s 7.5 million students and staff in the state’s
10,000 TK-12 schools. The OSH develops and disseminates
scientific guidance and policies; supports school-based health
centers; and facilitates collaboration between state and local
education and health officials.

About the Role:
The School Health Researcher (Research Scientist III;
Social/Behavioral OR Epidemiology/Biostatistics) will be
responsible for the independent design, development and
implementation of research, evaluation, and trend
analysis/performance monitoring focused on youth behavioral
issues and prevention efforts in school settings. Duties will
include providing authoritative scientific guidance to other
scientists and staff contributing to research, evaluation,
data analysis, performance monitoring, and school-based and
school-linked primary prevention activities for behavioral
health issues among youth including substance misuse and
suicide.
Responsibilities:

Conduct scientific analysis and preparation of data for
tracking/performance monitoring.
|
|
♦ |
Design and conduct public health performance monitoring
focused on primary prevention for behavioral health
issues, as well as school-based health centers (e.g.,
student receipt of health services, provision of health
services by centers, service funding mechanisms).
|
|
♦ |
Take steps to increase access to available data and
related findings in the areas of general behavioral health
prevention and school-based health centers.
|
|
♦ |
Prepare data and findings from analysis for dissemination
to stakeholders.
|
|
♦ |
Prepare ADA compliant data briefs, fact sheets, and other
materials to be shared on relevant CDPH webpages, as well
as via email blasts, social media posts, presentations,
webinars, and other methods.
|
|
♦ |
Disseminate scientific study findings by preparing
scientific reports, publications, and presentations of
relevant scientific findings.
|
|
♦ |
Develop data dashboards that include data sources and data
consistent with the requirements of Health and Safety Code
124174.3 on school-based health centers, as well as other
relevant data (e.g., injuries, behavioral health).
|
|
♦ |
Ensure the scientific quality and integrity of all data
shared online.
|
|
♦ |
In collaboration with epidemiologists and public health
experts, coordinate this data work with related
surveillance efforts (e.g., EpiCenter, CA School-Based
Health Alliance).
|

♦ |
Provide technical assistance to data users on how to use
the data dashboards.
|
|
♦ |
Develop and provide technical assistance and resources to
help data users translate data into actionable information
to use for decision-making, program planning, and
evaluation purposes.
|
|
♦ |
Provide scientific leadership and technical scientific
consultation to other researchers and state and local
public health entities, as well as school-based health
centers.
|
|
♦ |
Act as a CDPH spokesperson on the public health aspects of
behavioral health risks and outcomes related to schools
and students, as well as school health topics more
broadly.
|
|
♦ |
Actively serve as a team member on internal and external
teams, advisory groups, and scientific forums to enhance
the availability, quality, sustainability, and proper
interpretation of complex data.
|
|
♦ |
Make scientific decisions based on data to inform programs
and policies.
|
|
♦ |
Participate in the general functions of the Office of
School Health (e.g., participate in meetings,
develop/contribute to bill analyses, respond to media and
other requests, contribute to the Schools Hub and Office
Hours, contribute to development and submission of
grant/contract proposals). Provide technical scientific
consultation to other staff at CDPH and partners in State
Government. |
Desirable Qualifications:

♦ |
Experience conducting research or surveillance of
behavioral health, school-age youth, or other public
health factors.
|
|
♦ |
Prior involvement evaluating programs focused on
behavioral health, school-age youth, or other public
health factors.
|
|
♦ |
Knowledge of conducting, summarizing, and interpreting
statistical analyses in SAS or using other statistical
software.
|
|
♦ |
Proven experience with development of resources/materials
intended to disseminate and translated data/research
findings (e.g., reports, presentations, fact sheets, data
visualization, dashboards).
|
|
♦ |
Demonstrated experience interacting effectively and
achieving results with internal team members and external
partners.
|
This position is based in Sacramento, CA and may be eligible
for a hybrid-telework schedule with some in-office
requirements.
