Job Description
The World Trade Center Health Registry
(WTCHR) was developed as a public health response to evaluate
the physical and mental health impact of the September 11,
2001 disaster. Over 71,000 rescue/recovery workers and
community members are enrolled in the Registry. Housed within
the Division of Epidemiology in a renowned and dynamic agency,
the Registry's research influences national policies
concerning healthcare for those who survived the attacks. The
WTCHR's Research and Survey Unit seeks an early to mid-career
research scientist with exceptional scientific skills and
experience conducting epidemiologic research and working with
large, complex datasets. The Unit's multi-disciplinary
scientists lead and participate in WTC disaster related
research on a range of physical and mental health outcomes
among children, adolescents, and adults, including chronic
diseases, PTSD, depression and anxiety, functional impairment,
and psychosocial implications of long-term disaster health
effects and unmet health care needs as well as methodologic
studies. The Unit also has responsibility for designing
periodic follow-up surveys and conducts in-depth nested
studies, quality control of research output prior to
publication, and recruitment for approved external researcher
studies among other activities. Working in a highly
regarded collaborative environment.
DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED
TO:

Conduct independent and
collaborative analyses of WTCHR longitudinal survey data and
other city administrative or survey
Under guidance of the Lead of the
Epidemiological and Statistical Support sub-unit in the Survey
and Research Unit, will
serve as author or co-author on scientific studies in
areas such as mental and physical health effects of exposure
to the
9/11 disaster among adult, adolescent and/or child
community survivors and/or rescue/recovery workers. Will
also serve
as a consultant to other Registry staff on epidemiology
study methods.

Conduct independent and
collaborative analyses of WTCHR longitudinal survey data and
other city administrative or survey data and produce
manuscripts and presentations.

Conduct quality assurance
of other analysts' work and Registry scientific output.
·
Participate in the design
and implementation of WTCHR surveys and nested studies
including questionnaire development.
·
Maintain confidentiality
of identifiable data.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Candidates must have:
1. A doctorate degree from an
accredited college or university with specialization in an
appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or
social science and one year of full-time experience in a
responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity
in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A master's degree from an
accredited college or university with specialization in an
appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or
social science and three years of responsible full-time
research experience in the appropriate field of
specialization; or
3. Education and/or experience which
is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates
must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field
of specialization and at least two years of experience
described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist
Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1"
and "2" above.
Preferred Skills:
- PhD in epidemiology
- Experience working with large
complex datasets and conducting longitudinal data analysis
- Competence in or subject matter
familiarity with statistical analysis of longitudinal data
including mixed models, growth curve models, disaster
epidemiology, disaster related children's research,
synergistic relationship between mental and physical health
- Proficiency in data analysis using
SAS and/or R
- Experience publishing scientific
manuscripts, preferably some as first author
- Ability to work collaboratively with
interdisciplinary team on research manuscripts
- Strong written and verbal
communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word,
Excel, and PowerPoint.
