The Division of Epidemiology and Community Health, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota is recruiting a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor to join one of the oldest and largest MCH and Epidemiology research and training programs in the United States. Those with interests in women’s health including maternal-child nutrition, sexual health, reproductive and perinatal health, and related areas, and those using a transgenerational, life course approach to maternal and child health, are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will develop and lead a strong research program in an area relevant to maternal-child health. Successful candidates are expected to establish and maintain a track record of grant-funded research as Principal and Co-Investigator, and publish research articles in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals in their field of study. Second, the successful candidate will develop and lead a program of teaching within the MCH program area. The expectation is that the successful candidate will also advise MPH and PhD students on a variety of topics.

Specific requirements for the position are:

1) Previous training in maternal and child health, epidemiology, or a related health field with an earned doctorate:

(a) PhD, DrPH, ScD or equivalent; or

(b) MD or equivalent with MPH, MS or equivalent in epidemiology or related field;

2) Research experience in maternal-child health populations and topics;

3) Publication record in relevant peer-reviewed journals;

4) Evidence of potential for obtaining independent external research funding;

5) Evidence of involvement with students, though teaching, mentoring, and/or advising

Desirable qualifications include:

1)     External research funding as Principal Investigator, or as the recipient of an early career training award;

2)     Evidence of successful graduate level (or comparable) teaching and advising experience, including online teaching experience.

3)     Commitment to and/or experience with building scholarship that includes translational work with communities or partners outside academia

The School of Public Health is committed to supporting an inclusive community. In pursuit of this goal, we will prioritize candidates with a track record of working with students, colleagues, and community members with diverse perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds, and candidates with experience overcoming – or helping others overcome – barriers to academic success.  Candidates from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

The University of Minnesota –Twin Cities campus is in the large and vibrant metropolitan area of Minneapolis-Saint Paul, with a wide variety of cultural and recreational activities, and a very high quality of life. The multi-ethnic population of the Twin Cities, including Minnesota's immigrants, provides rich opportunities to conduct community-engaged research with diverse and often underserved populations.

The School of Public Health is consistently ranked in the top 10 of all Schools of Public Health in the United States, and is among the very highest in research productivity. The Division of Epidemiology and Community Health (http://www.sph.umn.edu/epi) provides a rich and collaborative environment for the investigation of the etiology, distribution, and prevention of disease integrating both clinical/biological and social/behavioral perspectives and methods. The Division offers graduate training programs leading to the MPH, MS and PhD degrees, and has active pre- and post-doctoral training.  It has 45 primary faculty members who bring in over $30 million annually in sponsored research grants, and an additional 80 adjunct faculty.  Major assets of the Division of Epidemiology and Community Health include access to several ongoing community-based intervention studies and large prospective cohort studies.

MCH program faculty and students benefit particularly from the close links with the Center for Leadership Education in Maternal and Child Public Health which has been continuously funded by the federal Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)/Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) since 1954. Our Center is committed to improving the health of children, women and families through leadership education of future public health practitioners and academicians, scholarship through research on the health needs of MCH populations, and strong partnerships with community leaders, organizations, and other academic departments. Our program also offers an epidemiology track for MCH students and an online degree option, which extends the reach of the program to a national audience.

In addition there are numerous opportunities for collaboration with the faculty in other Divisions within the School of Public Health (Biostatistics, Health Policy and Management, Environmental Health Sciences) and with colleagues in other Schools across the University, including those in the Academic Health Center (Medical, Nursing, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine), Humphrey School of Public Policy, Law School, among others). The University of Minnesota’s many Centers and Programs provide further opportunities for collaboration (including the Obesity Prevention Center, Epidemiology Clinical Research Center, the Institute for Child Development, Minnesota Population Center, Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility, and the University of Minnesota Program in Health Disparities).  Faculty in the MCH program have a strong history of collaboration with external partners, including federal and state public health and health service agencies, especially the Minnesota Departments of Health and Human Services, VA Medical Center, the Mayo Clinic, and other large insurers and providers.

Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and background.  The position will be available starting July 2018. The position will remain open until filled.  For questions contact Mary Belisle (mbelisle@umn.edu).  Applicants interested in more information about this position can contact: Dr. Ellen Demerath (Professor, Epidemiology & Community Health) at ewd@umn.edu, or 612-624-8231.

To apply, please submit a cover letter describing research and teaching experience and interests, CV including publications list, and a list of at least three referees on-line using the following link: z.umn.edu/35xu . Reference Job ID number 321383.
