The Department of Research & Evaluation (R&E) at Kaiser Permanente Southern California (KPSC) is recruiting candidates for a Mid-to-Senior level Biostatistician Research Scientist (equivalent to an Associate or Full Professor). The Biostatistician Research Scientist will direct research projects independently and collaboratively on a wide range of research initiatives, internally, federally and industry supported.

Qualifications include a Ph.D. in biostatistics or a related field. Competent in advanced research methods including study design and statistical techniques commonly used with complex longitudinal data in causal inference, comparative effectiveness research, epidemiology, health services research, behavioral science, health economics or related fields. Requires at least 7 years of experience with an established track record serving as senior or principal biostatistician on extramural grant funding and scientific publications and mentoring junior level investigators.

The Biostatistician Research Scientist:

• Designs, develops, and directs biomedical and biostatistical research. Prepares grant proposals and creates analytic plans for grant proposals, internal reports, and manuscripts for publication in high-quality peer review journals both independently and collaboratively.

• Contributes to research proposals. Serves as mentor and/or collaborator on grant proposals and both externally funded and internally focused research projects.

• Develops and publishes novel statistical methods and applications for use in biomedical research.

• Mentors junior-level research scientists and post-doctoral trainees.

• Provides service to the scientific community through reviewing manuscripts for publication and serving on editorial boards, grant review panels, and national boards of directors.

• Presents at internal and national and international scientific meetings.

• Maintains awareness of scientific developments within area of expertise, both in terms of new methodology and new research activities.

• Serves on and may Chair departmental committees based on experience and expertise.

• Teaches/lectures in internal and academic settings.

KPSC is a leading integrated health care system that provides comprehensive care for approximately 4 million members of diverse race and ethnicity from Southern California. The integrated health care provided to these members is tracked through a system-wide electronic health record, which includes membership, utilization, vital signs, laboratory and pharmacy records. The Department of Research Evaluation has access to unparalleled data resources, including a Research Data Warehouse that combines curated EHR data for both inpatient and outpatient visits with additional data from external registries and outside claims. In addition, the Department maintains both a Virtual Data Warehouse and the PCORnet Common Data Model to facilitate collaboration with external researchers.

By joining the KPSC research team, you will work with other researchers in a collegial setting that fosters public domain research, independent thinking, and adherence to the highest scientific standards. R&E investigators are primarily supported by grant and contract funding from federal and other external sources, especially the National Institutes of Health.
