Old Dominion
University invites applications for a 10-month full-time,
tenure-track faculty position in Biostatistics in the School
of Community and Environmental Health.
The position will begin in the summer o 2018. We are a
growing, diverse multidisciplinary environment with an
inclusive excellence faculty. The School of Community and
Environmental Health seeks faculty with a strong biostatistics
background, experience in public health, and health-related
research. Incoming faculty will be expected to maintain an
active program of research, teaching, and service. The
successful candidate will develop independent research
projects and serve as a collaborator/co-investigator on
current and future studies, including, but not limited to
epidemiologic and other public health-related research. The
successful candidate will be expected to develop an active
program of research, graduate teaching/advising, and service,
to pursue external research funding and to be a collaborative
researcher, with methodological approaches grounded in and
informed by public health. Responsibilities include research,
advising students and teaching at graduate and undergraduate
levels, and departmental, school, university, and professional
service. The responsibilities include mentoring and teaching
master’s degree and doctoral students. The position reports to
the Chair of the School of Community and Environmental Health
in the College of Health Sciences (http://www.hs.odu.edu).
Appointment at the level of Associate Professor requires a
record of significant achievements in research, teaching, and
service including an independent research program or strong
potential for obtaining extramural funding to establish an
independent research program.
We are
seeking a researcher scholar and professional committed to
public health research, teaching, service, and practice. The
successful applicant will have an interest in working
collaboratively with students and faculty. The candidate
should have strong research expertise in methodology and the
ability to develop analytic plans for new and ongoing research
initiatives, guide and conduct statistical data analyses,
perform data management, and provide data interpretation. The
candidate must have excellent oral and written communication
skills, particularly regarding communicating research plans
and findings to diverse public health audiences.
The
candidate should have extensive, strong research expertise in
biostatistics and research methodology. Specifically, the
candidate must have significant experience in study design, in
developing analytic approaches for health-related studies, and
in guiding and conducting statistical data analyses, and data
interpretation. The candidate must also have the requisite
competencies to effectively teach and mentor students in
rigorous biostatistics and research methodologies, including
statistical applications, data analysis, research study design
and related areas such as effectively communicating data
results orally and in writing. The candidate must be able to
communicate data findings and results as well as
methodological approaches to a range of audiences. Proficiency
in at least one statistical and data base software such as SAS,
SPSS, STATA, is required.
Experience with epidemiologic
research and experience and understanding with epidemiologic
approaches and methods are preferred. Candidates with evidence
of peer-reviewed publication and extramural funding preferred.
The successful candidate should be able to work as part of a
multidisciplinary team or with varied audiences (students and
faculty from diverse disciplines).
Requirements
Candidates for this
position must meet the following minimum requirements:

Earned terminal degree (e.g., PhD, ScD) in biostatistics or a
closely related field from an accredited public health
program, school, or institution;
·
Proficiency in at least one standard statistical data base
software, preferably SAS
·
Expertise in biostatistics and research methodology including
study design, data interpretation, data management, and data
analysis;
·
Strong record of research (peer-reviewed publications, grants)
in biostatistics or related area considering career stage and
research potential;
·
Excellent oral and written communication skills; the candidate
must be able to communicate (in written and oral form)
methodological approaches (study design, analysis plans etc.)
and research results effectively and so that they are
interpretable by varied public health audiences
·
Comprehensive competencies and training enabling the
candidate to teach in biostatistics and in
related areas (e.g., research methodology);
·
Demonstrated research independence or high potential for
research independence
Preferred attributes
of the candidate include:
·
Experience with epidemiologic research and an understanding of
epidemiologic approaches and methods;
·
Demonstrated experience working with others and across
departments or disciplines; Collaborative research potential
and experience, particularly as related to public health;
·
Evidence of public health training and experience;
·
Graduate-level teaching experience in biostatistics or a
closely related field
·
Experience advising and mentoring graduate students in
biostatistics or a closely related research area in public
health;
·
Experience with a range of biostatistical methods and research
methodologies;
·
Potential for securing external research funding
