The Rollins School of Public Health (RSPH) of Emory University is recruiting a leader with a forward-looking vision to serve as Chair of the Department of Epidemiology (EPI; www.sph.emory.edu/departments/epi). Applicants should possess a doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, MD, or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline; a prominent record of academic achievement; a demonstrated capacity to secure external research funding; dedication to faculty career development and to training the next generation of epidemiology students; and strong advocacy for methodological and applied research. Candidates should have a strategic understanding of trends in the field; demonstrated ability to foster creativity and innovation; and proven leadership and management abilities. The committee will accept applications from candidates with a record that merits appointment as a tenured full professor. The Department Chair position is supported by an endowed chair. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.

The Department includes 40 primary faculty members, 55 jointly appointed faculty members and over 70 adjunct faculty. The faculty are diverse and productively engaged in research on a broad range of topics including cancer, reproductive/pediatric/perinatal epidemiology, infectious diseases, cardiovascular diseases, HIV/AIDS, health in correctional systems, nutrition, genetic/molecular epidemiology, social and environmental determinants of health, and public health preparedness. There is a strong tradition of collaboration between EPI faculty and faculty from other departments in RSPH and the School of Medicine, Woodruff School of Nursing, the College of Arts and Sciences, Laney Graduate School, and Winship Cancer Institute. Additionally, the Department has multiple centers, including Center for Public Health Preparedness and Research, Emory Center for AIDS Research, Emory Program in Cardiovascular Outcomes Research and Epidemiology, Georgia Center for Cancer Statistics, Women’s and Children’s Center, and the Center for Spina Bifida Research, Prevention and Policy. Research and training collaborations occur between the Department and a host of local, national, and global institutions, including CDC, NIH, the National Academies, the American Cancer Society, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the World Health Organization. The Department enrolls approximately 130 new masters and 10 doctoral students each year.

RSPH currently employs over 200 full-time faculty members and each year enrolls approximately 600 new full- and part-time graduate students in its MPH, MSPH and doctoral programs. The School is located on the Emory University campus, adjacent to the CDC, Emory’s Schools of Medicine and Nursing, and a number of laboratory and clinical facilities. Emory is a major research university and member of the AAU; its endowment is among the largest of US universities. The university enrolls over 14,000 students, approximately half in undergraduate programs and half in graduate and professional programs, taught by 3,000 faculty.

Applicants should apply to Emory position 74180BR and email a letter of interest and curriculum vita to: Dr. Paige Tolbert, Search Committee Chair, c/o Nancy Sterk (nsterk@emory.edu). Applications will be kept confidential and references will not be contacted without the permission of applicants.
