The
UCSF-Kaiser Permanente Urological Epidemiology Research Career
Development Program (UCSF-KPNC UroEpi)
provides
interdisciplinary training to prepare scholars to become
independent investigators in Benign Urological Epidemiology.
The Program is funded by the National Institute of Diabetes
and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) as an Institutional
Mentored Career Development Program (K12). The joint program
between the
University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and Kaiser
Permanente Northern California (KPNC)
brings together unparalleled opportunities for
research in Benign Urological Epidemiology with access to
accomplished mentors from the UCSF and KPNC faculty. In
addition, the access to the data resources of these
institutions and the KPNC membership allows the conduct of
unique epidemiological studies.
The program
seeks to:

Recruit highly qualified, motivated, and socio-demographically
diverse MDs, PhDs, and MD/PhDs
committed to
becoming independent clinical researchers in the epidemiology
of benign urological conditions.
·
Develop Scholars’ proficiency in epidemiology, research field
methods, research ethics, leadership, manuscript preparation,
and grantsmanship.
·
Individualize each scholar’s career development plan according
to his or her background and future career goals.
ABOUT THE UCSF-KPNC UroEpi PROGRAM
The K12 Award
under this program is considered a career development award.
These awards are directed at individuals planning an academic
career, who have
a PhD, MD, or comparable doctoral degree and
are
in early faculty or final year post-doctoral
positions. This K12 award supports early career
investigators with
2- to 5-years of intensive mentored research, combined with
patient care for clinician-investigators. Successful
candidates will have experience formulating and conducting
research studies, publishing manuscripts and applying for
funding with a focus on epidemiology and/or benign urological
conditions.
The UroEpi
Program provides faculty at UCSF or KPNC total salary support
of up to $100,000 per year. The awardee must devote
75% of full-time professional
effort (50-75% for surgical specialties) to
conducting research and research career development.
The program also provides Scholar support for research related
activities. Scholars should have no more than five years of
postdoctoral research experience and not more than 10 years
should have elapsed since receiving the terminal doctoral
degree. Mid-career and senior researchers are not eligible.
Scholars must be a US citizen or Permanent Resident.
Salary and academic rank
in the appropriate department
at UCSF or in the Division of Research at KPNC
will be commensurate with experience and achievements.
Clinicians will practice part-time in the
faculty practice.
Scholars will be matched with a team of
experienced mentors from diverse disciplines. Each mentor team
will assure that each scholar is integrated into clinical and
translational programs at UCSF and/or KPNC. The mentors will
support scholar research by providing access to resources and
by integrating scholar training in core disciplines critical
to their future success. Mentors are available from a wide
range of disciplines and include internationally recognized
senior researchers with expertise in benign urologic disease
and/or epidemiology.
Examples of areas of focus include:

The genetics of benign urological diseases
·
Use of electronic health records (EHRs) in benign urological
epidemiology.
·
Etiological epidemiology related to lifestyle (e.g., diet,
physical activity, body mass index (BMI), pharmaceutical use)
·
Disparities in benign urological disease among potentially
sensitive populations such as the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and
transgender (LGBT) community or by race/ethnicity
·
The epidemiology of urological complications of other
conditions (e.g., diabetes, cardiovascular disease,
neurodegenerative diseases, multi-morbidity)
·
Potential role of environmental factors in benign urological
disease
