The Department
of Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Research, CancerControl
Alberta, Alberta Health Services invites applications for
a Research Scientist position. This core-funded AHS
position offers the opportunity to pursue independent and
collaborative multidisciplinary research with 75% of time
protected for research with 25% time for teaching, trainee
supervision and service activities. The Department of Cancer
Epidemiology and Prevention Research currently has a team of
nationally and internationally recognized cancer
epidemiologists and statisticians together with a core group
of experienced research staff, engaged in population-based
cancer research including etiology, molecular and genetic
epidemiology, and biostatistics. A major focus of the research
activities has been on modifiable lifestyle risk factors
involved in cancer etiology and survival. All members of the
Department also have academic appointments at the University
of Calgary and collaborate with other researchers at the
Charbonneau Cancer Institute (https://charbonneau.ucalgary.ca/)
and the O’Brien
Institute of Public Health (https://obrieniph.ucalgary.ca/)
in the Cumming School of Medicine. Appointments will be
granted in appropriate Institutes and Departments of the
University of Calgary at an academic level commensurate with
experience. The appointees will be expected to obtain external
research funding from provincial and national agencies to
support their research program.
The Province of Alberta has made a major investment in cancer
through the $500 million Alberta Cancer Prevention Legacy
Fund, complementing the long term endowment funding provided
by the Alberta Cancer Foundation for large scale epidemiologic
research projects that include the Alberta Tomorrow Project.
In addition, the provincial government in its strategic plan
for cancer control in Alberta to 2030 includes a strong
commitment to cancer prevention research and programs. The
design and planning is also underway for an innovative,
state-of-the art comprehensive cancer control campus in
Calgary that will be the focal point for all areas of cancer
control, including research.
Ranked the fifth most livable city in the world, Calgary is
one of the world's cleanest cities and one of the best cities
in Canada to raise a family. Calgary is a city of leaders – in
business, community, philanthropy and volunteerism. Calgarians
benefit from numerous cultural and entertainment events,
community-oriented neighbourhoods, diversity and more days of
sunshine per year than any other major Canadian city. Calgary
is less than an hour's drive from the majestic Rocky Mountains
and boasts the most extensive urban pathway and bikeway
network in North America.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have a PhD in Epidemiology,
Population and Public Health or related health discipline with
some experience in a research setting beyond doctoral

record of successful research demonstrated through
peer-reviewed publications, research funding commensurate with
stage of career, and maturity of their personal strategic
research plan. Expectations for the current position include
the establishment of a vigorous, sustainable,
externally-funded research program (for which 75% time will be
protected), complemented by contributions to teaching,
graduate student supervision, professional and academic
service. Successful candidates need excellent oral and written
