Postdoctoral fellowships are available within the Infections
and Immunoepidemiology Branch (IIB) of the National Cancer
Institute’s Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics. The
mission of IIB is to discover infectious causes of cancer,
elucidate the determinants of malignancy for established
oncogenic infections, and clarify how alterations in immunity
and inflammation relate to cancer risk.
IIB is seeking postdoctoral fellows interested in working in
three areas: 1) investigating genetic determinants of chronic
infection with hepatitis C virus and viral risk factors for
hepatocellular carcinoma; 2) evaluating risk factors for
Burkitt lymphoma and the epidemiology of malignancies in
HIV-infected people in Africa; and 3) determining the minimum
number of doses required of human papillomavirus (HPV)
vaccines to provide durable protection, clarifying the
etiologic role of HPV in cancer, and translating findings into
prevention opportunities.
IIB conducts national and international multidisciplinary
research in collaboration with laboratory scientists,
clinicians, and statisticians. IIB field studies include
biological specimen collections allowing for molecular and
immunological testing to define exposures and outcomes of
interest. Descriptive epidemiology studies aimed at
quantifying and explaining trends in cancer incidence and
mortality are also a focus.
Working with branch investigators, fellows take lead
responsibility for analyzing and summarizing data and in
writing manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifications:
Candidates should possess a strong background and skill in
epidemiology, particularly in relation to infectious causes of
cancer; statistical analysis; and critical thinking and
writing.
